The history of American social welfare includes an array of public and voluntary social welfare agencies, associations and societies created at various times for different purposes. The common thread for the organizations listed here is their stated purpose or mission for helping individuals, families, groups or communities that have experienced poverty, physical abuse, mental or physical disability or discrimination based on gender, race or ethic origin.
